  • Extensive bare-frame restoration

Few names carry the same weight in the world of classic British motorcycles as Norton, and this beautifully restored desert racer represents a wonderfully usable and thoughtfully rebuilt example of the marque’s rugged competition-inspired machines. Imported into the UK from Los Angeles and displaying 4,500 recorded miles prior to restoration, a figure believed to be genuine by the vendor. The bike has benefitted from an extensive rebuild.

Purchased by the current vendor in May 2024, the motorcycle had previously formed part of a long-term restoration project started by Mr Hales-Dutton before being stored for a number of years. Upon recommissioning, the vendor determined that some earlier work fell short of the desired standard, prompting a full strip-down to bare frame level and a comprehensive rebuild using a combination of newly sourced components and parts already acquired during the earlier restoration.

The frame was refinished, the front forks fully rebuilt with new stanchions, bushes, springs, gaiters and seals, while the wheels were professionally rebuilt by Sid’s Wheels using polished stainless steel rims and spokes. The engine was rebored with new pistons fitted, the cylinder head overhauled, and Steve Maney-installed exhaust thread inserts added. New gaskets, seals and clutch plates were fitted throughout, while the magneto was rebuilt by Armoto. The carburettors were also refurbished with new needles, jets, gaskets and StayUp floats.

Additional works included refurbishment of the fuel tank and oil tank, installation of a custom wiring harness and solid-state rectifier, new control cables, battery and rear chain, plus rebuilt instrumentation. The previous owner had also commissioned re-chroming of numerous brightwork components including the mudguards, handlebars, exhaust pipes and headlamp rim.

Following completion, the motorcycle was MOT tested and UK registered in Swansea on 1st December 2024. The vendor reports that the bike starts easily, rides exceptionally well and delivers strong low-end torque and acceleration characteristic of its desert racer gearing.

Accompanying the motorcycle is an impressive history and documentation file including:

  • Extensive invoices covering the restoration works
  • Original air filter
  • Original sump guard and fixings
  • Sumo spanner
  • Shaft support plate tool
  • Norton workshop manual
  • Correspondence relating to the original US importation and purchase
  • Various magazines and ancillary materials
  • V5C registration document
  • Dating certificate and registration paperwork
  • Previous MOT certificates
  • Original purchase invoice
  • Receipts from both the current vendor and Mr Hales-Dutton

A highly detailed and evidently passionate restoration of an increasingly sought-after classic Norton, offered with exceptional provenance and a substantial accompanying history file.

Please note: the bike is still being run in and will require the usual post-run-in checks and adjustments, including re-tightening the head and checking all nuts and bolts once it has covered a few more miles.
