Estimated Price: £40,000 - £50,000

Launched in 1985, the 300SL was the ultimate incarnation of the updated R107 and was available for only four years, with just 13,443 ever built globally, making them a rarity in right-hand drive. It was powered by a 2,962cc straight-six that produced 185bhp at 5,700rpm and 188lb/ft of torque at 4,400rpm, sufficient output to endow this open-topped Mercedes with rapid acceleration and a top speed of 130mph. The matching hardtop kept the driver warm on winter days, and consequently they often became 'daily drivers' and consequently suffering the long-term effects of the UK's salted roads unlike their more fragile brethren who spent the winter in heated garages.

No such concerns for this immaculate, final-year of production, Signal Red R107 300SL which was delivered new to heavyweight boxer, actor and celebrated nightclub proprietor Billy ‘’Golden Boy’’ Walker during his time on Jersey as a tax exile. He is a famous British heavyweight boxer who became a massive national television and sporting icon in the United Kingdom during the 1960s. Known for his striking blonde looks, charismatic personality, and explosive punching power, he was often referred to as both "The Golden Boy" and "The Blonde Bomber" and must have cut a dashing figure driving around Jersey in his gleaming new Mercedes.

The SL was acquired by its next owner through Stratton of Knutsford in 1994 at which point it had just 7,500 miles. During her ownership over the next thirty-one years, the car continued to be cherished to the point that only the Bentley Knutsford dealer was allowed to remove and refit the hardtop.

Today the SL displays an indicated 63,987 miles with a full documented service history including 16 stamps in the book, with the most recent at 62,785 miles. There are numerous supporting invoices detailing brake refurbishment, new exhaust, new windscreen, fuel system including a new fuel tank, steering box and replacement alternator.

In March 2025 it was acquired for the Collection on the strength of its long-term ownership and early backstory. Inevitably, it was decided to further improve the SL with a body restoration and repaint to an exceptionally high standard, with any additional mechanical work or cosmetics carried out at the same time. The car will benefit from a fresh MOT prior to the sale.

The design of the R107-Series of Mercedes SL appears almost timeless and this late-production, Signal Red, 3-litre car is a simply exceptional example.
