  • In current ownership for 23+ years
  • A very useable example
  • Smart and original interior
  • A great value R107

Few motor cars evoke the effortless glamour of open-air grand touring quite like the enduring Mercedes-Benz R107 SL. With its poised stance, restrained elegance and vault-like engineering, it came to define luxury motoring across two remarkable decades, becoming a symbol of success, sophistication and continental adventure.

Offered here is a particularly appealing example of this iconic SL, presented in the classic two-seat roadster configuration and accompanied by its desirable detachable factory hardtop. The R107’s proportions, masterfully penned under the direction of Bruno Sacco, remained largely unchanged throughout its eighteen-year production life - a rare testament to a design so inherently right that it required no reinvention. Its clean lines, subtle chrome accents and perfectly balanced silhouette continue to exude understated prestige.

This example presents attractively overall and clearly benefits from long-term, attentive ownership. The engine fires readily, settling into a reassuringly smooth idle, and the SL is reported to have been consistently garaged - factors which undoubtedly contribute to its well-preserved character.

Cosmetically, it remains highly usable and enjoyable as it stands. A small number of minor paint imperfections, including a couple of areas of light bubbling, are present; however, these do little to detract from the overall appeal and could be addressed to further enhance both presentation and long-term value. There is some further rust on the inner boot lid that would require attention but again, it appears isolated and a relatively straightforward repair. The distinctive ‘Mexican Hat’ alloy wheels are in notably fine condition, completing the period-correct aesthetic with style.

Inside, the cabin is a welcoming and well-preserved environment. The original blue leather upholstery shows only gentle wear consistent with age and mileage, retaining a pleasing patina that speaks to the authenticity. Of particular note is the presence of rare optional matching rear seats - an unusual and desirable feature that adds a layer of practicality to this otherwise indulgent open-top tourer.

The accompanying hardtop is included and presents well, offering versatility for year-round enjoyment. The existing soft top remains serviceable for occasional use, though a replacement in due course would elevate it further. While the history file has unfortunately been lost over time, the condition and manner suggest a life of careful use and sympathetic maintenance. Altogether, this is a highly usable and increasingly sought-after example of the Mercedes-Benz 350 SL - an evocative classic that delivers timeless style, engineering pedigree and the promise of relaxed, sun-drenched motoring in equal measure. Whether enjoyed on winding country roads or sweeping continental routes, it remains every inch the refined grand tourer it was always intended to be.
