If Tonka toys were brought to life, this is the sort of thing you’d expect to see. It’s not enormous - more compact than its presence suggests - but it has a squat, chunky stance that fills a parking space with confidence and with its almost upright windscreen is pure function and design in harmony. Its styling belongs to that wave of retro-inspired designs that emerged in the early 2000s, following the revival themes seen with the New Beetle and the BMW Mini.

Paying homage to the original 1960 FJ40, the FJ Cruiser first appeared as a concept at the January 2003 North American International Auto Show. Such was the positive reaction that Toyota approved it for production, with the finished version making its debut at the February 2005 Chicago Auto Show.

Built on a body-on-frame chassis, the production FJ Cruiser (XJ10) ran from 2006 through to 2022 - though North American sales ended in 2014 - with manufacturing taking place at Toyota’s Hamura plant in Tokyo (Hino). While often associated with the Land Cruiser lineage, it stands apart as its own distinct model within the broader FJ family. One of its defining features is the cleverly designed rear-hinged (macabre-ly named) ‘suicide’ doors, giving it practical five-door usability with a unique twist.

Finished in the rarely seen and highly desirable Heritage Blue with contrasting white roof and wheels, this particular FJ Cruiser 4x4 was first registered overseas in 2014 before being imported to the UK from Japan c.2016. Supplied by Autostorico, it was sold on 24th September 2019 for just under £30,000, as confirmed by the accompanying bill of sale. It benefits from the later and more sought-after specification, featuring the updated 4.0-litre 1GR-FE V6 engine paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission - part of the evolution that saw US sales end in 2014 but continued through to 2022 for other markets, such as the Middle East and Australia.

The service book on file records a comprehensive maintenance history, with servicing carried out on 3rd March 2017 at 25,641 miles by a Bosch Garage, 12th February 2018 at 28,291 miles by a Bosch Garage, and 18th February 2019 at 29,901 miles by a Toyota dealership. Further servicing was undertaken by Solo Classics of Pott Shrigley on 10th March 2020 at 36,648 miles, 6th March 2021 at 46,998 miles, 4th March 2023 at 77,899 miles, 15th April 2024 at 83,619 miles, and most recently on 24th June 2026 at 84,885 miles.

This striking mid-size SUV has certainly been the subject of much admiration around the office, and it is easy to see why the Toyota FJ Cruiser enjoys such a loyal following. It is offered with MOT history, a well-stamped service book, the owner's handbook, and its current V5C registration document.
