Of all the sports cars sold in America in the 60s, the Ford Mustang was perhaps the most famous. Ford designer John Najjar was an avid admirer of the Mustang bombers used in World War II and decided to name his latest creation after them. The first series of the Mustang was built between 1964 and 1973; the early models from the 60s, in particular, are highly prized by collectors. What made the Mustang popular were its sporty looks and the relatively low price of $2.368. This allowed many Americans to afford a sports car, which gave sales figures a tremendous boost. Various versions were available: a convertible, a coupe, and a sporty fastback. But naturally, for some customers, it could never be sporty enough. And so, Carol Shelby's help was enlisted. He applied his experience to the Mustang: less weight and more power was his main credo. Heavy parts of the car were replaced with lighter fiberglass components.
