Volkswagen 181 Acapulco Thing: one of 400, and therefore one of a handful. There are rare cars, and then there is the Acapulco. This Volkswagen Type 181, internationally known as the "Thing" and also called the "Kübelwagen" in other markets, began its life as a versatile, no-nonsense car with military roots. But this specific version, the Acapulco, is a very different story: a special edition built for a select and exclusive clientele. This car features the distinctive two-tone paintwork in white and blue, finished with a striped canvas roof: a combination that makes the Acapulco instantly recognizable among all other Type 181s. Built for the Acapulco jet set. Between May and July 1974, Volkswagen built only 400 examples of this Acapulco Thing, specially commissioned by two Mexican luxury resorts in Acapulco. The model was deployed to transport wealthy guests from the airport to the coast, a role that perfectly suits the car's carefree, colorful appearance.
