Chassis No. 2240143

According to information obtained from BMW Group Classic, this North American-specification 3.0 CS was built on 14 March 1972 and delivered the following month in Canada, wearing the striking factory shade of Riviera Blue. It was reportedly acquired in 1991 from its original owner by a long-term enthusiast based in British Columbia who would retain the E9 Coupe for an impressive 28 years. Photos on file believed to date from the mid-1990s show the car appearing very original and in good condition in its Riviera Blue livery over tan upholstery.

In the late-1990s, the decision was made to conduct a comprehensive restoration, utilizing only factory OEM components where possible. A complete repaint to the current, darker shade of navy blue was undertaken, while the interior would be upholstered in the striking shade of dark red. Further updates included the addition of 16-inch Alpina-style alloy wheels, driving lights with accessory Marchal covers, and a wood-rimmed Momo 'California' steering wheel.

Upon acquisition by its current owner in 2019, the 3.0 CS has undergone a host of significant improvements aimed at optimizing its power, handling, stance, and overall road manners. Its powertrain has been completely revised with the installation of a freshly built 3.6 liter “Rally Motor” built by Metric Mechanic with induction via triple Weber carburetors, using a Euro M30B34 engine block as its base, and mated to a lightened flywheel. This substantial power unit is backed by an equally stout five-speed Getrag 265 transmission built by Metric Mechanic, with a new heavy duty clutch. The suspension has likewise been completely updated, incorporating a fully adjustable coilover suspension kit using Koni shocks and Ground Control camber plates; sway bars were also added front and rear. The braking system was renewed, including a new master cylinder and rebuild of the power brake booster, among a host of other additions, improvements, and service items designed to make the 3.0 CS a reliable and confident driver. The majority of these efforts were entrusted to the highly capable outfit One Eight Zero of Ramona, California. The result of all this extensive restoration and development work is an E9 that both looks exceedingly sharp and can handle the twistiest of mountain roads with poise, power, and precision.

Inspecting the 3.0 CS today, it is hard to believe that the paint and upholstery were done nearly three decades ago, considering their visual impact and overall condition and presentation. Inside the smartly upholstered trunk, a factory spare wheel can be found along with a mostly complete selection of tools. A file of receipts since purchase accompanies the car and documents the exhaustive work performed on it since 2019, totaling in excess of $85,000. A test drive reveals a pleasingly sorted, quick driver's car that exemplifies the spirit of motoring enjoyment the BMW brand has become synonymous with.

With an attractive livery, substantial recent restorative work, tasteful updates and a strong Metric Mechanic engine/transmission pairing, this is a most endearing and usable BMW E9 Coupe.
