Introduced during the 1950s as affordable transport for post-war Europe, the Messerschmitt Kabinenroller quickly became one of the most recognisable microcars ever produced. Designed by aircraft engineer Fritz Fend and built by aircraft manufacturer Messerschmitt, its distinctive tandem seating, lightweight construction and aircraft-inspired controls set it apart from its contemporaries. Following the success of the enclosed KR200, the open-top KR201 Roadster was introduced in far smaller numbers, offering the same entertaining driving experience with a simpler windscreen arrangement and sporting appearance. Today it ranks among the rarest and most sought-after Messerschmitt variants, with only a handful of original examples known to survive.
Offered here is an exceptional 1958 Messerschmitt KR201 Roadster, understood to be one of approximately 20 surviving original examples worldwide. Discovered beneath a house in Sydney, Australia over two decades ago, it was found dismantled but remarkably complete. An initial phase of restoration began in Australia around 2010, concentrating on the bodywork before the project was exported to the UK in 2013 as a painted rolling shell with its accompanying components. Following a period in storage, the restoration recommenced in 2022 and was completed during 2023/24 by highly regarded Messerschmitt specialists, with careful attention paid to authenticity throughout.
Mechanically, the engine was professionally rebuilt by a respected Messerschmitt Club specialist using original and difficult-to-source components to ensure both reliability and originality. The interior has been correctly trimmed in the distinctive black snakeskin vinyl with red piping, sourced through specialist club channels, while numerous new-old-stock and period-correct components have been incorporated throughout the build. The quality of the restoration was recognised at the 2025 National Microcar Rally at Burford, held alongside the Messerschmitt Club's 50th anniversary celebrations, where the car was awarded 2nd Overall in the Concours d'Elegance from a field of more than 170 entries.
In summary, this represents an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire one of the most desirable and charismatic microcars ever produced. Beautifully restored, highly regarded within the Messerschmitt community and offered with recent concours success, it would make a wonderful addition to any serious collection of landmark motor vehicles while remaining a delight to drive and enjoy.
