Few hot hatches encapsulate the spirit of the 1990s quite like the Peugeot 106 Rallye S1. Developed as a lightweight, driver-focused performance car, the Rallye dispensed with unnecessary luxuries in favour of low weight, sharp handling and an exhilarating driving experience. Today, surviving examples have become increasingly sought after by enthusiasts, with well-presented cars commanding growing interest from collectors.

First registered on 16th August 1995, this example is finished in red and presents superbly, complemented by the correct Peugeot Sport livery across the bonnet, flanks and tailgate, together with its refurbished white 14-inch Rallye alloy wheels. Inside, the light-coloured cloth interior has been beautifully restored, featuring remanufactured seat fabrics produced using specially woven material before being expertly retrimmed by Custom Stitch'd. The original character of the cabin has been retained, complete with its three-spoke Peugeot Sport steering wheel, original radio, distinctive red carpets and matching red seatbelts, while the opening rear quarter windows remain another hallmark of the model.

Power comes from the lively 1,294cc fuel-injected, catalyst-equipped petrol engine, producing 100bhp at 7,200rpm and driving the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. Renowned for its free-revving nature and lightweight chassis, the Rallye remains one of the most rewarding driver's cars of its generation.

This Peugeot has benefitted from extensive restoration and refurbishment in recent years. The body has received a full respray together with new decals, while the suspension has been comprehensively renewed, including refurbished and powder-coated components, a rebuilt rear beam and new dampers. The braking system has also been overhauled with refurbished calipers and new brake lines.

Mechanically, the engine and transmission have been rebuilt, with the work including a new cambelt, water pump, driveshafts and wheel bearings. The original alloy wheels have been professionally refurbished and powder-coated before being fitted with new tyres, including the spare wheel.

The odometer currently displays 84,024 miles. Whilst this reading cannot be warranted due to the absence of supporting service history, the vehicle is accompanied by a substantial file of invoices documenting the restoration and maintenance work undertaken, together with its owner's handbook, MOT history, V5C registration document and two keys. The current owner has enjoyed the car for the past 11 months, with the vehicle having had 13 registered keepers from new. A fresh MOT is due to be completed prior to the sale.

The vendor reports that the Peugeot runs and drives very well, having recently completed the journey of approximately two hours to our auction premises without issue.

Combining the purity of the original Series 1 Rallye with an extensive programme of restoration, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire one of Peugeot's most celebrated modern classics. Lightweight, engaging and increasingly collectible, the 106 Rallye remains one of the definitive analogue hot hatches of its era.
