The Mk2 Golf GTI was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1983 and, like its predecessor, was well received by the press, with What Car? magazine awarding it 'Car of the Year 1985'. Incredibly, almost 40 years later, the Mk2 GTI remains one of the defining hot hatches of its era, combining everyday usability with engaging performance and timeless styling.
First registered on 20th February 1986 by Bristol Street Motors, Nottingham, this little GTI remained with its first owner for an extraordinary 33 years, from 1986 until 2019. Finished in Atlas Grey Metallic (LP7V), it retains its original paint with a glass-like finish, matching 1.8-litre 'EV' 112bhp fuel-injected engine paired with the factory 5-speed manual gearbox. Factory equipment includes tinted glass, a passenger door mirror and rear mud flaps, whilst the car is accompanied by its original leather-bound book pack, owner's manuals and even its original Volkswagen Golf GTI sales brochure.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this Golf is its provenance. While originally supplied by Bristol Street Motors, the dealership was acquired by Arthur Prince in 1987, with many of the staff transferring across. The very same Volkswagen Master Technician who carried out the car's pre-delivery inspection in 1986 continued to service and MOT the car until 2017, an extraordinary level of continuity that is documented within the history file and confirmed by a letter from the supplying dealership.
The service history is equally impressive, comprising 16 service stamps covering the period from 1986 through to 2025, accompanied by an exceptional history file containing almost every previous MOT certificate alongside a substantial collection of invoices documenting the car's maintenance throughout its life. The documented expenditure alone illustrates the consistently high standard of care this GTI has enjoyed.
Recent maintenance includes a cambelt and tensioner replacement, water pump, alternator, battery, fuel pump, front brake calipers, pads and hoses, together with a replacement exhaust system during recommissioning. Most recently, the engine bay was professionally dry ice cleaned in May 2026, presenting to an exceptionally high standard.
Factory features include the desirable manual steel sliding sunroof, original 14-inch steel wheels, Volkswagen radio cassette, Fischer cassette storage box, rear mud flaps and Hella high-level brake light. The interior remains exceptionally well preserved, with an excellent headlining, unmarked luggage compartment and the original space-saver spare wheel, jack and toolkit all present.
Having spent the majority of its life in the care of long-term owners and supported by one of the most comprehensive history files we have encountered on a Mk2 Golf GTI, this wonderfully original example represents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire one of Volkswagen's defining performance cars. Its originality, documented provenance and meticulous maintenance history make it equally suited to concours display, marque events or simply being enjoyed exactly as Volkswagen intended.
Known to the owner’s club, this is surely one of the absolute best presenting and surviving examples of the Mk2 GTI that we’ve ever come across, and your early inspection is welcomed and recommended to see for yourself just how remarkable this little Golf is.
