Few cars embody the spirit of American performance quite like the Ford Mustang Mach 1. By 1973, the Mustang had evolved into a more mature 'grand touring' machine, yet retained the V8 power, dramatic styling and unmistakable road presence that had established it as one of the defining muscle cars of its generation. As the final year of the original Mach 1, the 1973 model represents the closing chapter of America's first muscle car era before changing legislation and market demands transformed the performance car landscape.
This particular example enjoys provenance that is recognised well beyond the Mustang community, having starred in Wheeler Dealers (Season 14, Episode 3). During the programme, master mechanic Ant Anstead and presenter Mike Brewer undertook a comprehensive restoration, transforming a tired but fundamentally sound Mach 1 into the beautifully presented example offered today. The episode has since become a favourite amongst enthusiasts, adding a unique and fully documented chapter to the car's history.
Power comes from Ford's legendary 351 cubic-inch Cleveland V8, an engine celebrated for its strength, torque and distinctive character. Its reputation extended beyond Ford, with the same engine family chosen to power the De Tomaso Pantera, underlining its place amongst the great performance V8s of the era. During the Wheeler Dealers restoration, the engine was comprehensively overhauled, with improvements to the induction, ignition and exhaust systems restoring performance whilst maintaining its unmistakable soundtrack.
The chassis also benefitted from careful attention, with the suspension rebuilt to improve handling and the braking system upgraded to inspire greater confidence in modern driving conditions. Combined with the restoration of the bodywork and attention to period-correct detailing, the result is a Mach 1 that remains true to its original character whilst offering the usability expected by today's enthusiast.
More recently, the current owner has continued that sympathetic approach. Since returning to the UK, the Mustang has benefitted from additional work to ensure it complied with UK roadworthiness standards, allowing it to be enjoyed with confidence on British roads. The engine bay has also been professionally detailed to further enhance the car's presentation, whilst more than £2,000 has been invested with North Hants Tyres in replacing the oversized 17-inch wheels fitted during the television build with a correct-style set of 15-inch wheels and tyres. The transformation restores the Mustang's original stance and complements its authentic appearance. Significantly, the original 17-inch wheels fitted during filming accompany the car, preserving an important part of its Wheeler Dealers provenance for future custodians. Most recently, the Mustang has received a comprehensive service together with a full machine polish, ensuring it's presented in excellent order and ready for its next owner.
Combining Ford's legendary 351 Cleveland V8, documented Wheeler Dealers provenance and sympathetic ongoing stewardship, this Mach 1 represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the best-known examples of Ford's iconic muscle car, equally at home on display, at enthusiast events or being enjoyed as intended on the open road.
