Introduced in 1950, the Volkswagen Type 2 quickly established itself as one of the most versatile commercial vehicles of the post-war era. Sharing much of its engineering with the Beetle, including its rear-mounted air-cooled flat-four engine, the Type 2 proved dependable, economical and remarkably adaptable. The distinctive split windscreen of the early models would become one of the vehicle's defining features, remaining in production until 1967 before giving way to the later bay-window design. Today, the 'Splitty' is regarded as one of the most recognisable and collectible classic Volkswagens, admired for its unmistakable styling, engineering simplicity and endless versatility.
First registered in July 1963, this left-hand drive Type 2 Panel Van was imported into the UK in December 1988 and passed to its second UK keeper in October 2013. It is understood that during its early life in Germany it served with the local fire brigade before eventually being treated to a specialist ground-up restoration and sympathetic camper conversion by the respected Wildwood workshop. Well known within the Volkswagen Split Screen Owners Club, the van has enjoyed success on the show circuit, collecting multiple 'Best in Class' awards at classic vehicle events.
The interior has been beautifully finished in a period style with burgundy vinyl trim featuring contrasting red piping, complemented by a body-coloured dashboard and white and wood veneer rear panelling. Practical additions include a rock-and-roll bed, fold-out table, rear storage cupboards, curtains, modern rear-mounted stereo and Kenwood speakers, creating an inviting space equally suited to weekend touring or longer adventures. Factory features are understood to include the desirable side barn doors, sliding side windows, push-out front quarter lights, under-dash storage shelf and original heating and ventilation controls.
Power is provided by a 1.5-litre air-cooled flat-four driving through the rear wheels. It sits on attractive chromed 15-inch steel wheels with domed hubcaps and slightly wider-offset rims, shod with Jupiter Radial A/T tyres. Further practical additions include a stainless-steel roof rack and tow bar, making the Type 2 as usable as it is charming.
The van is accompanied by a history file containing photographs, correspondence from Volkswagen confirming its production date, maintenance invoices and supporting paperwork documenting its careful ownership. Notable works include reconditioning of the dynamo and regulator together with the installation of the tow bar by respected Volkswagen specialists Volkstech of Morecambe in 2014.
In summary, this is a beautifully presented Split-Screen Volkswagen that combines show-winning presentation with genuine usability. Whether enjoyed as a classic camper, promotional vehicle, hospitality unit or simply as one of the most charismatic classics of its era, it offers its next custodian an opportunity to own a remarkably versatile and increasingly collectible Volkswagen.
