2020 Land Rover Defender SE D Auto

“ High spec. and a desirable colour, this is a great opportunity to grab Land Rover's best seller. ”
This is only the second ‘new generation’ Defenders we’ve sold but we’re becoming increasingly smitten with them.

Background
Replacing the iconic Defender was no easy task, which might explain why Land Rover dithered for so long; those of us who tested new cars for a living at the time expected a seamless transition from the model JLR put out of its misery after a 67-year unbroken production run.

In the end we had to wait until 2019 to see it unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show – and many of us suspected that the firm had spent those three years quaking in its boots.

It needn’t have worried because, apart from the diehards who would never be satisfied with anything that didn’t feature last-generation engineering and the aerodynamics of a brick (a gap into which Ineos stepped with its not-based-on-a-Defender-at-all-honest-guv Grenadier) the new car was very well received.

The carapace is an aluminium monocoque and it sits on four-wheel independent suspension. Despite this new-fangled engineering, Land Rover was careful to maintain the old model’s legendary off-road prowess and you’ll find height-adjustable air suspension, a wade-sensing system that measures the depth of water you’re crawling through, a low-ratio transfer box, configurable terrain response, a locking centre differential, active rear locking differential, and Hill Descent control.

The launch model was the Defender 110, which actually has wheelbase of 118.9-inch but, y’know, heritage ‘n’ all that. With four doors and seating for five as standard, the factory offered the option of a third-row seat that extends that to seven – and if you want to be able to seat six instead of seven AND keep some boot space then an optional jump seat can be fitted in between the two front seats, although you can’t have that AND the rear row, presumably because of laden weight and commercial vehicle classification ‘n’ stuff.

The two-door, 101.9-inch wheelbase version arrived a year later. Obviously, tradition dictated it should be christened the 90 and again it boasts seating for six if the buyer splashed out for that optional extra front seat.

The engine range comprised two four-cylinder diesels, a D200 or D240, plus two petrols, a four-cylinder P300 or six-cylinder P400. Both engines are mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic with a twin-speed transfer box and permanent four-wheel drive.

Overview
With just one former registered keeper and 53,000 miles on the odometer, this 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 has been in the seller’s care since February 2023.

Finished in Tasman Blue with a black leather interior, ‘SN20 VKH’ also benefits from a selection of expensive URBAN styling parts including a roof panel with four powerful LED lights.

Powered by the two-litre turbocharged D240 diesel engine that offers 236bhp and a stonking 317lb.ft of torque, this example offers seating for five people.

Coming from a man who loves his 4x4s – he’s only selling his Defender because his new Land Cruiser has arrived – it’s being offered for sale in an honest condition that includes a few light marks, making it ideal for the enthusiast who wants to use it for work and play.

Estimate: £30,000 - £35,000
