Few vehicles encapsulate the carefree spirit of 1960s California quite like the Meyers Manx. Conceived by engineer, boat builder, artist and surfer Bruce F. Meyers, the Manx was introduced in 1964 as a lightweight recreational vehicle built around the proven mechanical components of the ubiquitous Volkswagen Beetle. Its distinctive fibreglass body, featuring pronounced wheel arches, an open cockpit and exposed rear engine, was designed to exploit the Beetle's robust chassis, rear-engined traction and exceptional versatility. Equally at home on sand dunes, beaches and public roads, the Manx quickly became an icon of the emerging dune buggy movement. Combining influences from military Volkswagens and European beach cars, the Manx delivered simple, accessible motoring with a unique sense of fun. Its success was immediate, achieving notable victories in off-road competition and inspiring countless imitators, becoming one of the most copied automotive designs of its era. Today, the Meyers Manx is recognised as a landmark of American automotive culture and remains one of the most desirable and collectible dune buggies ever produced, celebrated for its innovative design, enduring appeal and unmistakable character.
Built from the ground-up in 2018 by marque specialist Buggy Builders, this example features a 2+2 configuration, derived from one of Bruce Meyers' original designs. The fibreglass bodywork is presented in the classic Sherbet Orange, while the fibreglass hardtop offers respite from the rain, or the sun's harsh rays after a long day beachside. The 2+2 layout offers a surprising amount of room for four adults, allowing for a much more versatile vehicle. Buggy Builders combined custom upholstery with a steering system from an Audi A3 and VW Type 2 gauges, blending authentic 1960s charm with a few modern touches. Manxter 2+2s are rare as hen's teeth, and this right hand drive example is especially so. Consigned by Charlie McCreery
