The Jaguar 240 was introduced in 1967 as the final development of Jaguar's compact Mk. II saloon. Although it was designed as a more affordable model, it retained much of the elegance and engineering that had made the earlier Mk. II famous around the world. Powered by a 2.4 litre version of Jaguar's smooth XK six-cylinder engine, the 240 produced respectable performance for its time and could comfortably cruise at motorway speeds. Visually, the car remained unmistakably Jaguar. It featured graceful, curved bodywork, a prominent chrome grille, slim bumpers, and a luxurious cabin trimmed with wood veneer and leather. Compared with the earlier Mk. II 2.4s, the Jaguar 240 received several simplifications intended to reduce production costs, including slimmer seating and fewer decorative details, yet it still felt refined and distinctly premium. The 240 was available with either a four-speed manual gearbox, often combined with overdrive, or an automatic transmission. Drivers appreciated its balanced handling, strong brakes, and surprisingly lively character for a compact saloon.
Originally registered on 2nd February 1968 this Jaguar presents well in the fine colour combination of Old English White with red leather interior. The vendor has owned this Mk. II for 20 years and has enjoyed the car immensely. He has made some subtle but important improvements on the car, namely the fitment of electronic ignition and power steering. The 2.4 litre engine runs well, and the manual gearbox operates as it should, together with the overdrive.Best described as a good, honest example, this 240 has been kept in a garage and well looked after. Reading the history folder gives a very good account of how well cared for this Jaguar has been. Supplied with a V5 registration document, this MoT and road fund licence exempt Mk. II is offered at a very realistic reserve, given the quality and expenditure in recent years. The Jaguar 240 represents the end of an important chapter in Jaguar history, combining traditional British luxury with dependable mechanical simplicity and timeless styling.
