The YZF-R1, or simply R1, is a 998cc sports motorcycle made by Yamaha. The R1 was launched in 1998 after redesigning the Genesis engine to create a more compact engine by raising the gearbox input shaft and allowing the gearbox output shaft to be placed beneath it. This ‘stacked gearbox’ was followed by other manufacturers. In its first update in 2000 the YZF-R1 gained over 150 modifications, all aimed at taming the beast. After launching the bike, Yamaha discovered very quickly that the two-wheeled world wasn’t quite ready for a bike as violent as the 1998 model and it needed a bit of restraint. While the most obvious modifications were the toning down of the paint and the replacement of the carbon exhaust end can with a titanium unit, under the skin this was a far more refined beast. The carb settings received a tweak, the engine had its friction losses reduced, the gearbox was improved and the R1 shed 2kg in weight. On paper these modifications seemed a little lacking, however Yamaha had also modified the R1’s chassis, as well as beefing up the castings to make the chassis more rigid, the bottom yoke was stiffened up, the weight bias shifted more forward and the suspension overhauled, transforming the R1 from a slap-happy animal to a slightly less slap-happy creation that was at last rideable for the majority of riders.

This bike has come from a private vendor whose son bought the bike as an ex-demonstrator from Woods of Abergele in May 2002 and rode the bike until 2004. Unfortunately, he suffered a bad motocross accident and was unable to ride the bike after then, however, the family kept the R1 for him to enjoy looking at and hearing run as he never lost his passion for motorbikes and enjoyed watching racing and going to the TT races. Sadly, he passed a couple of years ago, but the bike was kept in his memory, but the time has now come to find the bike a new loving home so that it can get the use it deserves. It starts and runs but hasn’t been ridden for some time now so will require a full service and MOT. It comes with 2 keys, owners handbook, original factory exhaust and is clear on HPi.
