Following the pattern established across much of the Mercedes-Benz range, the second-generation CLK-Class gained the coveted AMG badge in 2002, bringing with it a compelling blend of effortless performance, sharp handling and unmistakable exclusivity. At the top of the line-up sat the formidable CLK 55 AMG, powered by a muscular V8 producing 367hp, enough to launch the elegant coupe from 0-60mph in just 5.2 seconds - performance that rivalled many contemporary sports cars. Distinguishing the range-topping model were a host of bespoke AMG enhancements, including redesigned front and rear aprons, sculpted side skirts, 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, a twin-exit AMG exhaust system and a discreet boot-lid spoiler that reduced rear axle lift by more than 50 per cent. The CLK 55 AMG Cabriolet (A208) remains an exceptionally rare sight in the UK, with only a few hundred examples produced worldwide, the vast majority destined for the American market. Most of the remainder stayed in mainland Europe, leaving only a handful officially reaching British shores. Priced at an eye-watering £70,000 when new, it has retained an air of exclusivity ever since.

This 2003 example is finished in metallic silver with a charcoal leather interior complemented by blue inserts. The paintwork remains well presented, displaying only light signs of use that are entirely consistent with its mileage. Its distinctive 18-inch AMG alloy wheels are also in excellent order and perfectly capture the bold styling of Mercedes' early-2000s performance models. It was an era that also produced icons such as the Pagani Zonda, powered by an AMG V8, and the dominant silver McLaren-Mercedes Formula One cars, representing a golden period for the marque in both design and engineering. Inside, the leather upholstery is equally well kept, showing only modest wear in the areas most frequently used. We are advised that the electrically operated soft-top functions exactly as intended. Today, the Mercedes-Benz CLK 55 AMG offers exceptional value, combining refined luxury with the thrilling character of its 367hp naturally aspirated V8, one of the most charismatic and rewarding engines of the modern era.
