Few cars better represent the affordable hot hatch of the turn of the millennium than the Citroën Saxo VTR. Light, compact and refreshingly simple, the VTR combined the Saxo's famously low kerb weight with a punchy 1.6-litre engine, five-speed manual gearbox and more purposeful chassis set-up. The result was a car whose appeal came less from outright power and more from its agility, responsiveness and ability to make an ordinary road entertaining.
This 2001 example has covered a displayed 63,300 miles and, remarkably, has remained within the same family from new, with the current keeper having owned the car since 2002. The interior is described as presenting exceptionally well, an increasingly important consideration with surviving Saxos, while the exterior displays weathering to the paintwork, primarily across the bonnet and roof.
Its history is equally appealing. The original book pack remains with the car, including the owner's handbook, radio code and service book containing nine stamps from new through to 2012. Since then, invoices are present for a further eight services, providing a substantial record of continued maintenance throughout the car's life.
The accompanying invoices also record considerable ongoing maintenance, including replacement brake pads in 2019, discs and calipers in 2023, a replacement exhaust in 2024 and a new windscreen in 2025. Earlier work includes a replacement offside front spring and catalytic converter, while invoices are present for every MOT since 2010.
The vendor advises that there is currently an intermittent leak from the sunroof and notes the aforementioned weathering to the roof paintwork.
Once an everyday sight, unmodified Saxos are becoming increasingly difficult to find. With its low displayed mileage, single-family ownership and substantial history, this VTR is a wonderfully nostalgic example of the lightweight French hot hatch.
