  • Low owners and previous long term ownership
  • Extensive recent recommissioning
  • Well presented with low mileage

The Volkswagen Golf GTI has long been regarded as one of the defining performance cars of its era, and this 1989 Golf GTI 16V is an appealing example of the much-loved Mk2 generation. Finished in black with a black cloth interior, it has covered 78,244 miles and is equipped with the desirable 16-valve engine and a manual gearbox.

First registered in the UK in 1989, the car has had just three former keepers, with the previous owner enjoying almost three decades of ownership. It is now fitted with an immobiliser and is reported to start and run well.

The exterior presents well, while the cabin is also in good overall condition. The black cloth seats, carpets and headlining have all stood the test of time well, with only a small hole noted in the driver's seat. The car retains its fully working manual sunroof, along with electric front windows. There is a missing section of window rubber around the driver's door, which is worth noting.

Of particular interest is the extensive mechanical work undertaken in December 2025, with an invoice totalling £7,122. This included replacement of the radiator, timing belt and tensioner, front and rear brake calipers, brake discs, pads, flexi hoses and rear wheel bearings. The brake fluid was also changed and the system bled.

The fuel system was investigated following a starting issue, with a seized warm-up regulator and metering head identified as being affected by deposits from old fuel. Both were replaced, along with the oil and filter following fuel dilution. Further work included fitting a new radiator fan, four Uniroyal tyres, gearshift bushes and a fore/aft gearshift pin, as well as resolving a coolant warning issue and fitting a new boil switch.

The heater matrix and interior fan were replaced, a passenger door handle fitted, the thermostat housing leak rectified and new wipers installed. The car was also treated to an all-over machine polish and fitted with a mild-steel exhaust system to original specification.

The accompanying history file includes the current and previous V5 documentation, current and previous MOT certificates, tax discs and the substantial 2025 invoice. Notes from a previous owner also record earlier maintenance, including a timing belt kit, water pump and antifreeze work, a full service, recommissioning following storage, replacement rear shock absorbers and mounts, and a 2008 service with all fluids changed and rear brake pipes attended to.

With its long-term ownership history, 78,244 miles and considerable recent expenditure on mechanical recommissioning, this Mk2 Golf GTI 16V represents an appealing opportunity to acquire one of the era's most iconic hot hatches, with its recent work providing a strong foundation for continued enjoyment.
