Introduced in 1971, the Rolls-Royce Corniche arrived as something rather special and It quickly established itself as one of the most desirable cars to emerge from Crewe.
Under the bonnet sits Rolls-Royce’s renowned 6.75-litre V8, featuring an aluminium-silicon alloy block, aluminium cylinder heads and twin SU carburettors. Power is delivered through a three-speed automatic transmission, while independent suspension at all four corners, complemented by hydraulic self-levelling, provides that unmistakably magic-carpet ride.
The Corniche was more than simply a Silver Shadow in evening dress. It received a host of distinctive details of its own, including stainless steel-trimmed half wheel covers designed to assist brake cooling, an elegant three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel and, notably, Rolls-Royce’s first standard-fit tachometer. Small touches perhaps, but precisely the sort of thoughtful details that made the Corniche feel suitably special.
And special it certainly was. From the moment it arrived, the Corniche became a favourite among the rich, famous and glamorous. Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones were among its notable owners, while David Bowie, Michael Caine, Elton John and Dean Martin were all reputed to have eagerly joined waiting lists that could stretch to two years. Its unmistakable presence also ensured a starring role on screen, appearing in everything from ‘Dynasty’ and ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ to ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ and ‘The Player’.
This particular example was delivered to its first owner in 1974 and remained within the same family for more than four decades, passing to his son in 2016. Naturally, some of the original paperwork has been lost over the years, but its long-term custodianship is evident. The Rolls has clearly enjoyed careful storage, and between 2024 and early 2026 it benefited from more than £16,000 of recommissioning and improvement work carried out by respected Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists.
Today, it presents in highly attractive order, retaining just the lightest patina befitting an example of its age and history.
Finished in the wonderfully period Willow Gold with White Vinyl Roof over a Cream leather interior, this is a particularly charming and unusually low-ownership example. Believed to be one of just 1,091 saloons produced, it offers the opportunity to acquire a genuinely charismatic Rolls-Royce with provenance, presence and plenty of old-world glamour.
One for those who appreciate their luxury with a little more attitude - and their motoring with an unmistakable sense of occasion.
