The Porsche 928 was conceived to take the company into an entirely new era, combining the performance expected of a Porsche with the comfort and refinement of a true long-distance grand tourer. By the arrival of the 928 S4, Porsche had developed the concept into arguably one of the most accomplished versions of the model, its muscular 5.0-litre V8, sophisticated transaxle layout and unmistakable styling creating a car capable of covering enormous distances at serious pace.
This is a particularly attractive example, finished in a deep burgundy metallic with a contrasting light leather interior. Its distinctive colour combination suits the shape beautifully and, despite the mileage displayed, the overall presentation is remarkably impressive.
The bodywork remains in fantastic condition, retaining a deep and consistent finish across those wonderfully distinctive 928 lines. Naturally, close inspection reveals a handful of minor stone chips and age-related imperfections, but these are entirely commensurate with a car of this age and mileage and do little to detract from what is a very smart and well-presented example. The trademark pop-up headlamps, integrated rear spoiler and broad rear quarters remain every bit as striking today as they were when the car was new, while it sits correctly on its period Porsche alloy wheels.
The interior is equally impressive. Finished in contrasting light leather with dark piping and a black dashboard and headlining, it remains remarkably well preserved. The front seats display only modest signs of use, while the rear accommodation, dashboard, switchgear and trim all present extremely well. The electric sunroof further adds to what was already a luxurious specification and helps make the 928 a genuinely usable classic GT.
Importantly, this example is accompanied by an excellent history file. The original service and maintenance documentation is present alongside a substantial collection of invoices and supporting paperwork accumulated throughout the car's life. Most significantly, the service book contains an impressive 21 service stamps, comprising maintenance carried out by Porsche main dealers, recognised Porsche specialists and independent garages. For a 928 displaying 150,865 miles, this level of documented maintenance is particularly reassuring and suggests a car that has been used as intended while receiving regular attention throughout its life.
At the heart of the S4 is Porsche's formidable 5.0-litre, 32-valve V8, producing approximately 320bhp and driving the rear wheels through the automatic transaxle. The rear-mounted gearbox contributes to the 928's famously balanced weight distribution, while its effortless V8 performance made the S4 one of the fastest and most accomplished grand tourers of its generation. This particular car is reported to run and drive very well, with the V8 providing exactly the smooth, muscular performance for which the model is renowned.
Well-maintained 928s have long been appreciated by knowledgeable enthusiasts, and examples combining strong presentation with substantial documented history are becoming increasingly sought after.
With its handsome colour combination, superbly preserved interior, extensive history and impressive 21-stamp service record, this is a highly usable example of Porsche's flagship V8 grand tourer and one that appears to have been cared for throughout its life.
