- Major recent expenditure including a new clutch
- Great specification
Presented in a wonderfully evocative colour combination and with an impressive level of recent expenditure, this Maserati 4200 Coupe is a particularly appealing example of the marque’s Ferrari-engined grand tourer. Both cosmetically and mechanically, the Coupe has been very well maintained throughout its life and, importantly, it drives exactly as it should, with no known faults. Start the V8 and the character really comes alive, with the unmistakable soundtrack of Maserati’s Ferrari-derived engine enhanced by the wonderfully aggressive note of the Larini exhaust.
We believe the colour to have been changed in 2015 to stunning Bianca Fuji Pearl, and it suits the flowing lines of the 4200 exceptionally well. Understated yet striking, it highlights the sculpted bodywork beautifully and, in our opinion, is one of the very best colour choices for this generation of Maserati. The gloss-black alloy wheels are in excellent, unmarked condition and complement the pearl paintwork perfectly.
Inside, the contrasting blue leather interior presents very well, retaining the elegant, sporting character expected of a Maserati GT, and even extends to the fabulous leather headlining. There is no obvious excessive wear or damage, with the only notable point being the familiar ‘sticky button’ issue affecting some of the dashboard controls. The buttons have been painted white to prevent any inconvenience when using them, and the vendor has also supplied a set of replacement overlays. Alternatively, a number of permanent repair solutions are readily available, and we feel this would be a worthwhile finishing touch to make an already very appealing example even better.
The Maserati benefits from a good service history, with ten stamps recorded in the service book. The first owner had it maintained by the Cardiff Maserati dealership, although, rather unusually, these initial services were not stamped in the book. All subsequent servicing has been correctly recorded, providing a reassuring record of ongoing maintenance.
The V5C confirms three former keepers from new, while the 4200 comes with an MOT certificate showing no advisories, valid until 16 February 2027.
There has also been considerable expenditure this year, with approximately £7,050 spent on significant maintenance and improvements, including:
Full service and engine re-tune - £1,350
Brake shoes and fittings - £800
Brand-new full F1 clutch kit - £3,850
New front brake discs and pads - £650
New rear Dunlop Sport Max tyres - £400
New battery fitted in 2024
The front tyres are Goodyears with approximately 6mm of tread remaining, while all four gloss-black painted wheels remain in very good condition.
One point worthy of note concerns the speedometer. In 2007, the original unit was replaced by Cardiff Maserati under warranty, with the faulty unit recording 41,700 miles at the time. The Maserati has subsequently covered approximately 40,000 miles, giving a current total mileage of around 81,700 miles.
Overall, this is an exciting and great looking Maserati GT with the right ingredients: Ferrari-derived V8 power, a fantastic exhaust note, the desirable F1 transmission, a superb colour combination, three former keepers and, crucially, substantial recent investment in the mechanicals. It is an example that can be enjoyed immediately while also offering plenty of scope to finish the small cosmetic details and make it truly exceptional.
