The early history is well documented, with just a handful of Lancashire-based owners recorded before the car disappeared from view for a period. It resurfaced in 1993 in the ownership of Russell Williams of Harrogate, who embarked upon a comprehensive seven-year restoration. Works included a full repaint in the original colour and an engine rebuild by Mercedes specialists Crewe Engines, with total expenditure exceeding £8,500, a vast sum in the mid 1990's. The restoration was completed to an excellent standard and its quality remains evident today, some 25 years and only around 9,000 miles later.
By 2003, the car had covered just a further 1,000 miles and was acquired by respected Mercedes-Benz Club member Michael Lovegrove, who was drawn to its outstanding condition and originality. The current owner purchased the car in 2022 and has continued to maintain it regardless of cost, investing in excess of £20,000 over the last four years. Recent works include fitment of inertia reel seatbelts, a complete brake overhaul, electronic ignition, conversion to alternator power (with the original dynamo retained), rebuilt twin Solex carburettors, new engine mounts, timing chain adjustment, new bumpers, re-silvered headlamp reflectors and a stainless-steel exhaust system, amongst numerous other improvements.
Showing 62,500 miles, this beautifully preserved Ponton is described as driving exceptionally well and presents in outstanding condition throughout. Eligible for the Mille Miglia and a host of prestigious historic touring and rally events, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire a highly original and exceptionally well-maintained example of one of Mercedes-Benz's most enduring and admired classics.
