Bonneville Salt Flats, 7 August 1986, the Porsche 928 S4, piloted by Porsche factory driver Al Holbert, reached 171.926 mph (276.7 km/h), officially becoming the world's fastest catalyzed production car and the fastest production model available on the American market.

With more than two decades of production, the 928 was Porsche's first model powered by a front-mounted V8, instantly recognizable by its expansive glass surfaces and large rear hatch. Introduced in 1986, the Porsche 928 S4 was an evolution of the model, featuring a 5.0-liter V8 with four valves per cylinder, producing 320 PS, along with refined aerodynamics, redesigned bumpers, and a rear spoiler that increased high-speed stability and downforce while reducing drag. These improvements helped recover the performance lost to emissions-control equipment, which had reduced output to 288 PS.

Delivered new in Switzerland in April 1989 through AMAG, this 928 S4 was finished in Indischrot and specified with a number of desirable options, including heated and power-adjustable front seats with memory, limited-slip differential, and a sunroof. Interestingly, three Porsche Exclusive Z-Orders appear on the digital built sheet and are confirmed on the options sticker. It is believed that the distinctive and very 1980s fabric seat inserts are part of this Special Wishes request.

Showing just 115,663 km from new, the car is accompanied by extensive documentation with regular use and serviced and maintained by Porsche and AMAG. Its stamped service book is complemented by anti-pollution service records dating from 1989 to the present, as well as service invoices dating back to 2002, available on file.

Over the past three years, this 928 S4 has undergone significant maintenance, including a full brake-system service, a cooling-system flush, repairs to the sunroof, a thorough inspection and servicing of the electrical system, and a clear-coat restoration with ceramic treatment. This year, the car received a comprehensive service and passed its latest inspection.

While many rightfully associate the 928 with a luxurious nature and a suite of amenities typically seen in a grand tourer, Porsche's forward-looking car was every bit the athlete expected of the marque. The 928 S4's exploits at Bonneville are certainly a highlight, but so too must have been the return trip following its record setting run, with tinted glass, air conditioning, cruise control, and a 10-speaker HiFi sound system all as standard equipment.
