A joint project between Porsche and Volkswagen, the Porsche 924 was intended to replace the 914 as a more practical car that would serve a wider audience. With a front-engine, rear-transaxle layout, the 924 offered excellent weight distribution, tempting Porsche to undertake further development projects and, naturally for Porsche, this led to competition. Porsche would tread lightly at first with Jürgen Barth rallying across the globe. Once proven in the toughest competition, Porsche homologated the 924 as the Carrera GT building the required 400 examples in 1981 to place the 924 in FIA Group 4 GTP, IMSA GTO, and SCCA C Production.

First shown at the 1979 Frankfurt Auto Show, Porsche engineers were able to remove over 136 kilograms from the 924 Turbo while exterior enhancements included a hood scoop, wider fenders, forged aluminum Fuchs wheels, and a larger rear lip spoiler. Featuring upgraded suspension, larger four-wheel disc brakes, and a five-speed manual transmission, the 924 Carrera GT offered customers racing pedigree at a price on par with the 911 SC.

An early example, Carrera GT chassis number 0061 is the 50th production car built to homologate the 924 for international racing. The Swiss-issued Porsche Certificate ordered via Centre Porsche Genève reveals that this example remains in its original livery of non-metallic Black over a Black leatherette interior. While not specifically mentioned on the certificate, the Black and Red pinstripe velour upholstery with Recaro sport seats was standard Carrera GT specification and remains fitted, understood to be original. Recorded optional equipment at the time of ordering included a limited-slip differential, 16-inch forged alloy wheels, sport shock absorbers, and more. Furthermore, the cover letter attached to the certificate reveals that the 924, in fact, retains its original matching-numbers engine.

The preserved Carrera GT's Swiss history resumes in 2020 at 79,430 kilometers, when it received extensive mechanical work including replacement of the suspension bushings, brake calipers, rear discs, exhaust, timing belt, and tensioner pulley. The car was also repainted and received attention to its seat upholstery and side-window controls. In 2023, the car visited Garage GTA S.A. in Plan-les-Ouates, where it received a general inspection, replacement of the spark plugs, water hose, and idle actuator, repairs to the temperature-sensor connection, and work to the exhaust manifold and turbocharger.

Offered today with only 83,408 kilometers and Porsche-issued build certificate, this early-production 924 Carrera GT combines genuine homologation pedigree with matching-numbers mechanicals and documented Swiss ownership and service. Its Black and Red pinstripe velour sport seat interior is the perfect finishing touch, preserving the unmistakable character of this rare 1980s Porsche.
