Unveiled at the 1972 Geneva International Motor Show, the 246 GT Spyder was based on the final E-series iteration of the 246 GT. Designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, this Targa-style convertible incorporated the evolutionary refinements introduced on the GT and was powered by the Dino's 2.4-liter V6, paired with a five-speed synchronized manual gearbox and capable of reaching a top speed of 235 km/h. The Spyder was readily distinguished by its removable black roof panel, while the rear quarter windows gave way to metal sail panels incorporating three air vents.
Celebrated for its razor-sharp mid-engine balance and lively character, the Dino quickly earned its place as a true sports car worthy of the Ferrari name. Originally conceived as a brand extension, it proved that performance was about far more than outright acceleration, combining an intoxicating blend of elegant design, evocative sound, and exceptional chassis poise. As Road & Track put it, “Ferrari name or no, the Dino is a Ferrari and the mystique plus the exciting shape plus the sounds plus the great chassis all add up to a lot of car.” Such was its success that orders continued to pour in even after production ended in 1974.
One of the very early Spyders, this example was produced in April 1972, just one month after the model's presentation at the Geneva International Motor Show, draped in Rosso Chiaro over a black vinyl interior, according to the report compiled by Dino authority Matthias Bartz available on file. Its rare original Warranty Card, which remains with the car today, confirms that it was delivered in Germany in June of the same year through the official Ferrari dealer Auto Becker.
The accompanying documentation and Massini report on file further trace the car's ownership in Germany from 1972 through the second half of the 1990s, before recording its passage to Sweden and Denmark and, by 2012, into the hands of Belgian rally drivers who were multiple Dakar Rally competitors and winners of the 2005 Rallye des Pharaons. Today the car remains in Belgian ownership. Its current owner bought it some fifteen years ago and only used it sparingly. Recent work includes dry-ice blasting of the engine and chassis, suspension, as well as a full detail. The black interior shows a lovely patina, while mechanically the car performs very well. A recent test drive from our team confirmed the type-correct engine and matching-numbers gearbox work in beautiful harmony.
Named for Enzo Ferrari's son, Alfredo ''Dino'' Ferrari, this grand tourer of timeless design is firmly established within the Ferrari lineage. Accompanied by an Operating, Maintenance and Service Book, a Spare Parts Catalogue, and its original Warranty Book, all neatly housed in a leather pouch, this Dino 246 GTS will undoubtedly appeal to driving enthusiasts, offering the raw, mechanical joy of rowing through Ferrari's iconic open-gated shifter.
