Few cars bear the traces of an interrupted history as clearly as this BMW 328 Sports two-seater Frazer Nash, a car whose story begins in the late 1930s and would not take its definitive form until after the war. Introduced in 1936, the BMW 328 was immediately regarded as a technical marvel: designers Rudolf Schleicher and Fritz Fiedler created a lightweight A-shaped tubular frame with independent front suspension and leaf springs on the rear axle, combined with an aerodynamic, hand-formed light alloy body—impressive for an era without wind tunnels. The special six-cylinder engine, with its steeply angled valves and three Solex downdraft carburetors, produced around 80 hp from just 2 liters, and in racing trim the car weighed no more than 780 kilograms. This example, from 1938, was one of the last six chassis of the 328 built and was shipped to England in the autumn of 1939 to AFN, Archie Frazer Nash's company and then-importer of BMW, with the aim of building a custom-made streamlined body for it.
