The Pininfarina-designed Ferrari Mondial 8 made its debut at the 1980 Geneva Salon, with its name paying homage to the famed 500 Mondial sports racer of 1953. While not a race car, ''Mondial'' translates to ''world,'' and instead reflected Ferrari's approach to designing the new model as a world-market car from the outset.
Ferrari continued to enhance the model through several iterations. First, the Mondial Quattrovalvole introduced four valves per cylinder in 1982, followed in 1985 by a larger, 3,185-cc displacement in the 3.2 Mondial and its Cabriolet counterpart. On U.S.-market cars, power rose to 260 horsepower while larger cylinder bores contributed to a 17-percent increase in torque to 213 lb-ft. Along with the new engine, refined styling brought the 3.2 Mondials closer aesthetically to Ferrari's two-seater models, with smooth body-color bumper assemblies, a similar front radiator grille design to the 328, and a fresh convex wheel design. Minor interior revisions completed the Mondial 3.2's transformation into a wholly refined 2+2.
This 3.2 Mondial Cabriolet, chassis number 61211, is a U.S.-market example finished in timeless Rosso Corsa over a Beige leather interior and a Nero soft top. Its accompanying clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report charts its early history in the Midwest and the East Coast, passing through Illinois, Florida, and Pennsylvania, and Indiana, before returning to Illinois in the 2000s. This period saw consistent, documented servicing from Continental Autosports Ferrari in Hinsdale, Illinois, into the early 2010s, with prior research reporting that a full engine-out service was conducted in 2010. Following a brief period in Arizona, the CARFAX Report places the Mondial in New York from 2016, where it remained, being sparingly driven and consistently maintained, into the early 2020s. The report also documents a service completed at Ferrari of Long Island in March 2021, which included a timing belt replacement.
