As the final rear-wheel-drive car to win the World Rally Championship, the Lancia Rally 037 has more than earned its place among rally's defining competition machines. Four decades after Walter Röhrl and Markku Alén secured the 1983 WRC title for Lancia against the all-conquering Audi Quattro, a team of distinguished rally veterans set out to reimagine the 037 for the modern era, crafting the Kimera EVO37.
Founded in 2021, Kimera Automobili may be a young brand, but its pedigree reaches directly into Lancia's golden age. Among the EVO37's developers are Sergio Limone, who led development of the original 037 as well as the Delta S4 and Delta HF, and Claudio Lombardi, who engineered Lancia's rally engines before contributing to Scuderia Ferrari's race-winning Formula One cars in the 1990s. At the helm is Italian former rally driver Luca Betti, who oversees the operation from Villa Kimera in Cuneo, Italy-approximately 100 kilometers south of Turin, where the original 037 was built.
This incredible pedigree made Kimera the perfect outfit to reinterpret the Lancia 037 for modern day. Unveiled by Betti in 2021 as Kimera's star project, the EVO37 was a faithful yet modern reinterpretation of Lancia's rear-wheel drive rally champion. Like the original, it begins with a donor Beta Montecarlo chassis, stripped and re-engineered before receiving a lightweight carbon fiber body. Contained within is a supercharged 2.1-liter 16-valve inline four powerplant-the same specification as the original 037-but built from scratch by Italtecnica and additionally featuring a turbocharger to produce an incredible 505 PS and 550 Nm of torque. Power is delivered exclusively to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission by Dana Graziano, with a claimed zero-to-100 km/h sprint in the region of three seconds and an estimated top speed of 310 km/h. Its desirable list of hardware further includes a Öhlins double-wishbone suspension and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with self-ventilated discs and four-piston calipers on all four corners.
Yet, Kimera discreetly tempered the EVO37's competition car character with modern conveniences, including LED lighting, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, and a refined interior with a digital rearview mirror. Each EVO37 was individually commissioned by its buyer, who could specify virtually every detail, from exterior finish and interior materials to stitching and bespoke inscriptions.
This Kimera EVO37, number 018 of just 37 examples produced, has been intentionally specified to pay careful tribute another innovative Italian juggernaut: Lamborghini. It is thus finished in Kimera Luci del Bosco, a deep shade of metallic brown that adorns some of the finest Miura and Countach examples to date. Its gold wheels are in further reference to the distinct specifications Luci del Bosco-clad Lamborghinis have enjoyed, as is the beige leather upholstery which clings to its carbon bucket seats. Further appointments in the cockpit include the retro rear-view mirror camera, parking sensors, and a special request wooden shift knob attached to its exposed shifter.
Built in March of 2025, EVO37 number 018 has covered only 237 kilometers at cataloging since its reinterpretation by Kimera Automobili. According to CEO Luca Betti, Kimera Automobili is eager to welcome the next caretaker into the Kimera family. Kimera will assist with the importation and registration of the car into any European country, or the U.S. Kimera has also offered to amend the specification to the owner's wishes, should its next owner choose to tailor number 018 to their own tastes. This gives the buyer an invaluable factory-backed ecosystem, as well as the choice to either preserve the EVO37's current and distinct color combination, or take advantage of Kimera Automobili's bespoke services and craft their own unique EVO37 specification.
Original Lancia 037s, whether in competition or coveted Stradale form, are exceedingly rare, making the opportunity to experience the marque's legendary rear-wheel drive WRC champion almost non-existent.
