Now here’s something you don’t see every day… or possibly ever!
The wonderfully named Chrysler by Chrysler was Chrysler Australia’s luxury flagship - a stretched, upmarket relative of the Valiant, created to take the fight to the Ford Fairlane and Holden Statesman.
This imposing 1973 four-door sedan has the engine to match its considerable presence: Chrysler’s fabulous 360cu in (5.9-litre) V8, coupled to a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic gearbox. With bags of torque and effortless cruising ability, it’s exactly the sort of engine a big Australian luxury saloon deserves.
Better still, this particular example was registered in the UK from new in March 1973 and has had just four owners in more than half a century. It is also thought to be one of only three remaining in the UK. Rare doesn’t really cover it!
Originally light blue, it is believed to have been professionally repainted in its current ruby red around 2015 and still presents very well. There are some age-related imperfections to the paintwork, as you would expect from an example that has actually been used and enjoyed, but nothing that looks out of place.
Its current enthusiast owner has done exactly that, using the Chrysler as his daily driver for the past six years. He tells us the underbody was treated with anti-corrosion protection every autumn and the only time it wasn’t driven to work was when it snowed!
Regular cosmetic and mechanical maintenance appears to have been part and parcel of ownership, and the big Chrysler drove some 40 miles to our facility without issue.
Inside, things are equally pleasing. There is little obvious wear and the cabin has developed a lovely, honest patina that suits the rest beautifully. A reversing camera and USB charging points have been discreetly added to make everyday life easier, although both could readily be removed should the next keeper prefer.
Big, rare, wonderfully eccentric and packing 5.9 litres of V8 muscle - this is Australian luxury 1970s style and quite possibly your only chance to own one!
