Mercedes-Benz introduced the R129 SL in 1989 as its flagship roadster, replacing the long-serving R107. It became known for one of its most distinctive features, a roll bar hidden behind the rear seats that could deploy upright in a fraction of a second if sensors detected an impending rollover. The range received its first significant update at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 1995, sharpening its look with body-color bumpers and a simplified grille while adding an optional panoramic glass-roof hardtop with a sliding sunblind and, for the first time on an SL, Xenon headlights.
This example was delivered new on 28 January 1997, finished in Imperial Red with a Grey leather interior. It was equipped with optional multi-contour front seats with electric adjustment and memory, xenon headlights, an upgraded sound system, and a factory anti-theft alarm. It has been since fitted with the rare and desirable factory panoramic glass-roof hardtop. The car was sold new that April in Washington State, where its first owner kept it for 27 years. It changed hands twice more after 2024, passing through two Florida owners before its recent arrival with the consignor. Under their care, the car benefits from having the convertible top hydraulic seals replaced in preparation for sale. A clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report supports 20,000 miles at the time of cataloging, consistent with decades in a single owner's care.
Well optioned, lightly used, and rich in long-term original owner provenance, this SL 320 pairs a desirable and rarely seen panoramic glass roof with a history rarely seen in the model today. Comfortable, quick, and equally at home with its panoramic hardtop in place or its soft top down, it remains one of the most compelling examples of Mercedes-Benz's flagship roadster.
