Here is something we have never had before, and we are very much embracing the Electric Vehicle world with this, a milk float. This is a very interesting example in lots of ways and drives like the cream of the crop. It has enjoyed a very expensive restoration from our vendor who is obsessed with milk floats and has just bought another one, hence, very sadly has to part with this one as he wants to take on the new project. This float is perfectly road legal and is exempt from Tax and MOT. If you live in and around the Chester area, you may have seen this driving around as the vendor used it, not to deliver milk, just to have some fun and free parking!
The vendor has owned this for around eight years and really enjoyed it, both driving and restoring, and is very knowledgeable about them. He has told us that the float was made by a company called Morrison / Crompton (Leyland) and was made in 1980 as a special order. The vendor has very kindly provided the following information:
“Classic Morrison/Crompton 4 Wheel D6 Milk Float.
DMR 465 V - May 1980. Short wheelbase - mid range 24 cell Milk float. One of the last ever built. Rare as it’s a late build, with a SWB and only 24 cells
By this time - Dairies were looking for LWB and 36-48 cells to get range and load on. So, it’s likely to have been a special order.
This float was rescued and rebuilt from the ground up - with picture evidence included.
It has had a significant amount of money spent on this:
- Complete new Braking system - Master cylinder, new Wheel cylinders all round and pipes / fluid and shoes. Cost over £700.
- New 2000’s controller - worth over £900 (smoother more efficient contacts)
- New battery boxes welded in, the structural front Wheel archers cut and welded to high standard, @ £400
- A replacement cab (although glass fibre - it has a metal inner frame - the old one had rotted out and so now this replacement cab is also a rare two-part version). £450
- Repairs, repaint and treatments from the chassis to the roof - total excluding labour £550
- Spare wheel with new tyre (these are hen’s teeth to get) £250
- A Specialist charger to allow 13-amp socket plug in (takes a little longer - but overnight cheap electricity and / or Solar makes it cheaper still) cost £575.
- Replacement batteries - 24 just 18 months ago - cost £1,850
- Months of loving labour spent along with copious amounts of consumables.
- Sub Total: £5,675 – WITHOUT LABOUR!
Un-Refurbished, cost would be c.£1,500. Total standing: £7,175 for a totally road legal (free tax and MOT exempt) vehicle - allowed in Bus lanes, park anywhere - loading bays etc.
This is a road legal float - it can be put to work on TV and Films as an extra or specific vehicle (easy to register these with the film studios). It can be an advertising vehicle around town or garden centres. It could also do work - fetching / carrying - the options are endless.
I’ve owned and loved this vehicle for over 6 years - but a new project milk float has come along and so this one rather than be neglected - needs a new loving home.
This is a rare ready to go late manufactured SWB Milk float. Green - as it’s electric and just 46 years young!”
One last thing, the vendor has asked if it can go to a good home as he couldn’t bear to see it go sour and not be used or enjoyed. As said, it has many uses and will be a great deal of fun as well. Remember, you will also be doing your bit for the environment as you have bought an Electric Vehicle.
