The first generation of the car was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on March 5, 1996. The XK was the long-awaited successor to the XJS, which was already 22 years old. The introduction of the XK also marked the market launch of Jaguar's new AJ-V8 engine. The XK was available as a coupe and a convertible and was always equipped with a 4-liter V8 coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission. There was, however, a choice of two power variants: 294 hp or 363 hp. The latter is powered by a supercharger. The variant without a supercharger was named XK8, while the variant with a supercharger was given the name XKR. The last X100 produced rolled off the assembly line on May 27, 2005; this was also the last car produced at Jaguar's Brownslane factory. This brought the total number of XKs produced in this generation to 91.406. Two-thirds of the XKs were convertibles; this version was particularly popular in the United States. In September 2002, a second facelift was introduced. In terms of appearance, this was limited to new headlight units for the XKR, which from then on featured black interiors instead of chrome.
