Ask any petrolhead what’s the best car chase ever committed to film and you’ll hear all manner of answers; Ronin, Speed Racer, French Connection, Mad Max, Blues Brothers, Vanishing Point, Italian Job, Smokey and the Bandit, Duel, Gone in 60 Seconds, many Bond films… the list goes one. But we reckon one film will crop up more than any other, and that film is ‘Bullitt’. Even if you are too young or stepped off the planet at some point, you really need to see that film. Because there is a very good reason for that, besides the excellent car chase. It’s because there’s cool, and then there’s ‘Steve McQueen in a 1968 Fastback Mustang playing tag with a Dodge Charger on the streets of ‘Frisco cool’! We are not suggesting you go and recreate that scene, although it would be rather good, just don’t think the chaps at the local constabulary would approve, at least professionally, maybe personally they would.
The vendor has very kindly provided the following description:
“Genuine 1968 Fastback
US-built, show-winning 'Bullitt' recreation
New crate 302ci V8 with 5-speed manual transmission
Fully restored cabin
Exceptional condition inside and out
That Highland Green '68 Fastback immediately earned its place at the top table in the hall of iconic movie cars, and remains a huge favourite amongst all generations of car enthusiasts. So much so that Ford were still selling 'Bullitt' special editions of their latest Mustang until a couple of years ago. But, of course, the '68 is the one you want. That's the genuine article, the real McCoy. Anything else is just not quite right.
As luck would have it, the aforementioned "real McCoy" is precisely what we have here. Just take a moment to salivate a bit over the images. It's a bit good, isn't it? Scratch that, this thing is divine.
Built from an original 'C code' 1968 Mustang Fastback in Florida during 2023, the current owner loved it so much that they came back to Blighty with the world's coolest holiday souvenir. There's no arguing with the quality on display here. Full, bare metal respray, new panels, new interior, new crate engine (a deliciously burbly 5-litre V8) and a classic 5-speed manual transmission - it really does hit all the right notes.
Stunningly well restored mechanically and aesthetically, you we rarely see such a well-judged and immaculately presented classic.

We would like to think you are getting to know how good this example is. It comes with a lot of paperwork including invoices and receipts (both from the USA and here in the UK), the original build details, details and instructions of lots of the new parts fitted, spare keys, the original ownership details from the US, along with a UK V5 and a clear HPi report. It carries on with a collection of trophies and winners’ medals from shows, and a photo album showing the restoration. The vendor is a little coy about the amount of money invested in this beautiful Mustang, but suggests that it is in excess of £100,000. Looking at it, that doesn’t seem enough, but there you go. This is a turn key example that would appear to be as close to perfection as you can get.
We aways recommend viewing a Lot you may be thinking about, it’s an important thing to do to satisfy yourself you are happy with everything you are thinking of buying. In this case just come any way! This is a rare example in every way and needs to be seen to appreciate it properly. If you like movie cars, we also have a Dodge Charger in this Auction too - the other car in that legendary film ‘Bullitt’. Maybe you could buy both, now there’s the perfect collection right there!
