From its inception in 1972, the Mercedes S-Class has remained the high-water line in the luxury sedan market. While an S-Class already exudes luxury and style, to add a sense of drama and performance, nothing comes close to the grand coupe. Stretching over five meters from bumper to bumper the S 63 Coupe commands presence.
Of the four different S-Class models available, the AMG Coupe benefits the most from the Affalterbach performance treatment. Powered by a hand-built biturbo V8 packing 604 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, the performance coupe blasts to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. The combination of expected S-Class levels of luxury and AMG power allows the grand tourer to make light work of crushing continents in style. The sporty stance lends well to an attention-grabbing color. Finished in a special-order paint code of Sunburst Yellow, the S-Class Coupe signals Mercedes-Benz's return to a true pillarless grand coupe with long and low proportions; its frameless glass, sweeping roofline, absence of B-pillars, and distinctive AMG styling give it a silhouette unlike anything else in the lineup.
The interior follows the same ethos of performance and luxury, with options that compliment both aspects. The heated and ventilated active multicontour front seats are upholstered in Black Nappa leather that extends to the dashboard, center console, and door panels, while carbon-fiber trim accents the cabin throughout. Additional appointments include heated rear seats, a powered rear sunshade, a surround-view system, COMAND infotainment with navigation, and a Burmester sound system.
For those in search of an automotive experience built for the open road, few cars deliver the combination of performance, luxury, and long-distance comfort found in the AMG S 63 Coupe. Best experienced on a long highway run where the biturbo V8's reserve of power and the cabin's opulent features can both be fully appreciated; it begs to be pointed toward the coast, letting the miles disappear.
