Perhaps sentiment plays a part, because 1975 is also when our own story with Alfa Romeo began. But that is exactly why we know so well what makes a Giulia special. It is not just the engineering. It is not just the styling. It is mainly the way everything comes together in a relatively simple four-door sedan that is far more enjoyable to drive than its shape might suggest.
The Giulia appeared in the early 1960s and was surprisingly advanced for its time. A lightweight body, an aluminum Twin Cam engine, a five-speed manual transmission, and a chassis clearly developed with the driver in mind. Even the angular bodywork was smarter than it looked. Considerable attention was paid to aerodynamics during development, allowing the Giulia to cut through the air with remarkable efficiency for a sedan of that era.
The Nuova Super arrived in 1974. The familiar fundamentals remained, but the car received, among other changes, a new black grille and a revised rear end. Some purists prefer an earlier Giulia. We understand that. But the Nuova has by now developed a character all its own, unmistakably rooted in the 1970s. And then there is this particular example.
Delivered new in Italy, in Plato, and finished in Blu Olandese with brown cloth upholstery. In our view, it is a fantastic combination. Not overly elegant, not made to look sporty, but simply exactly how an Italian family car from 1975 ought to look. And perhaps the most appealing part is inside.
The interior radiates originality. The fabric, dashboard, controls, and small traces of use tell far more of a story than a completely renewed interior ever could. This is not a car in which everything has been redone to look old. It simply feels authentic.
Mechanically, the story is equally convincing. The car still retains its matching-numbers engine and is accompanied by the original “Libretto di servizio.” The current mileage is around 70,000 kilometers and, based on the available history, that is certainly plausible. But ultimately, with this Giulia, you do not need to explain everything with paperwork. You can see it.
The bodywork, the interior, the details, and above all the overall impression make it clear that this is an especially original example. Not an over-restored car, and not a Giulia that has lost its character along the way. Just a genuine Nuova Super 1300. Blu Olandese. Brown cloth. Matching numbers. Italian history. And frankly, this makes us very happy. Perhaps precisely because this is exactly the kind of Alfa with which it all began for us in 1975.
