You recognise a Ferrari 360 Modena instantly. Yet every now and then, one appears that makes you look twice. Not because somebody has added something excessive, but because the specification is just different enough to make you wonder what you are looking at.

This is exactly that sort of car.

This 2001 Ferrari 360 Modena was ordered through the special showroom in Maranello and specified with several particularly interesting features from Ferrari's Scaglietti personalisation programme. The detail that immediately stands out is the removable roof panel. According to the available information, only around 25 examples of the 360 Modena were delivered with this unusual feature. Add the Prancing Horse shields on the front wings, and it becomes clear that the original customer did not simply choose a standard car from the brochure.

And somehow, that suits the 360 perfectly.

When Ferrari introduced the model at the end of the 1990s, the company itself was taking an important step forward. The steel construction of the previous generation was replaced by a completely new aluminium spaceframe developed together with Alcoa. The 360 became larger than the F355, yet the structure was lighter and considerably stiffer. Pininfarina also moved away from the angular forms and pop-up headlights of the previous generation, creating a much cleaner shape with aerodynamics playing an integral role in the design.

Beneath the glass engine cover sits the naturally aspirated 3.6-litre V8 producing 400 horsepower. And that transparent cover is there for a reason. Ferrari wanted the mechanical heart of the car to be visible. Red cam covers, the engine mounted behind the occupants and those four unmistakable round taillights behind it. More than two decades later, the 360 still looks wonderfully special.

But this example takes things a little further.

Grigio Alloy over Blu Scuro leather. Just take a moment to look at it. The light blue-grey metallic paint changes subtly depending on the light, while the dark blue interior creates a wonderfully sophisticated contrast. It is not the predictable Ferrari red combination, and that is precisely why it works so well.

Then you remove the roof panel.

Suddenly the Modena has another personality. You retain the elegant proportions and lines of the coupe, but on a beautiful day you can enjoy far more of the V8 sitting directly behind you. It is one of those factory options that makes you wonder why you almost never see another one. The simple answer is that very few appear to have been supplied this way.

This example has covered only 32,000 kilometres and remained in long-term ownership. Its history has been carefully documented and the accompanying file is as complete as you would hope to see with a Ferrari of this calibre. The condition tells the same story: original, beautifully maintained and remarkably well preserved both inside and out.

And on the road?

Exactly as a good 360 should be. It feels tight, eager and surprisingly light on its feet. The V8 builds revs with wonderful enthusiasm, while the whole car comes from that fascinating period when electronic systems were there to assist the driver rather than dominate the experience.

A 360 Modena with just 32,000 kilometres is already desirable.

One finished in Grigio Alloy over Blu Scuro becomes considerably more interesting.

But one ordered through Maranello, personalised through Scaglietti and fitted with that exceptionally uncommon removable roof panel?

That is a 360 Modena that genuinely separates itself from the rest.
