Chassis No. 128.037.10.002575

Introduced in 1958 as the range-topping model in Mercedes-Benz's W128 Ponton series, the 220 SE earned that rank almost entirely on one feature: Bosch mechanical fuel injection. Fed through the 2.2-liter inline-six, it lifted output to 120 PS, a figure the carbureted Ponton could not reach, and gave Mercedes-Benz its clearest argument that this was the most technically advanced car in the range. The optional Hydrak automatic clutch extended that same ambition to the way the car was driven, easing gear changes without giving up the manual transmission altogether. Updates in 1957 and 1959 further sharpened its style and drivability. Still, fuel injection remained the difference that mattered, the reason Mercedes-Benz could again call itself Germany's leading luxury marque and a pioneer of automotive technology.

This rare Coupé has since been restored under prior ownership to its current two-tone livery of Pearl Grey with a Black roof. Inside, its cabin was reupholstered with striking Red leather that plays well against the Coupé's oak trim across the dashboard, window surrounds, and door caps. True to its grand touring intent, the rear seatback folds flat to extend the already capacious trunk, itself trimmed with matching red carpet, for owners covering long distances with additional luggage.

After decades within a large Mercedes-Benz collection in Portugal and a change of hands to a Swiss collector in 2013, the car returned to the market only last year, when its current owner bought it at Broad Arrow's own Zurich Auction. It remains in splendid condition today, showing just 1,300 miles, or roughly 2,100 km, at the time of cataloging, believed to be the distance covered since its restoration.

Only 830 220 SE Coupés were built across three model years, making this flagship Ponton a rare way to experience Mercedes-Benz's fuel-injected six firsthand. Its character rewards an unhurried pace, the four-speed manual and refined six working together with the same smoothness and quiet confidence that set the Ponton Coupé apart when new.
