Now that is a story worth telling.
The Healey Silverstone is one of the finest expressions of postwar British sports car engineering. Donald Healey wanted to create a lightweight, capable sports car that could be driven on public roads and then taken straight onto the racetrack. Introduced in 1949 and named after the famous British racing circuit, the Silverstone was designed with one clear purpose: driving pleasure without unnecessary compromises.
Just look at it.
The narrow aluminum body, separate cycle fenders, headlights positioned behind the grille, and that wonderful spare wheel protruding from the rear. Every detail serves a purpose. Even the distinctive rear-mounted spare wheel was incorporated into the design to provide a degree of protection. This is not styling for the sake of appearance. This is genuine competition engineering from an era when simplicity and ingenuity mattered enormously.
Under the hood sits the famous 2.4-liter Riley four-cylinder engine, producing approximately 104 horsepower. Combined with a weight of around 2,070 pounds, a four-speed manual transmission, and a well-engineered chassis, the Silverstone delivered impressive performance for its day. More importantly, it offered exactly the kind of direct, mechanical driving experience that makes early competition sports cars so rewarding.
Only 51 examples of the original D-Type Silverstone were produced, and this car belongs to that exceptionally rare early series.
This particular Silverstone has been restored to its original condition, respecting the character and engineering that made the model so special. Yet its greatest attraction may be its extraordinary history.
An exceptionally comprehensive documentation file accompanies the car, including period photographs and records of its long involvement in motorsport. Its competition history begins in Kenya and continues through decades of enthusiastic ownership. This is not simply a classic sports car with an interesting story. It is a car whose story can be explored through the documents and photographs preserved alongside it.
We have always had a particular affection for the Healey marque. It is a fantastic manufacturer, and every Healey seems to have a story of its own. Some are charming. Others are remarkable. This Silverstone certainly belongs in the latter category.
And there is another exciting detail: the car is Mille Miglia eligible.
Imagine continuing its competition legacy on one of the world's most celebrated historic motoring events.
