The MGB GT has long been regarded as one of Britain's most successful and enduring sporting grand tourers. Combining the mechanical simplicity and engaging driving characteristics of the MGB Roadster with the practicality of a fixed-roof coupé, its elegant fastback bodywork was styled by the celebrated Italian design house Pininfarina. The result was a sports car that offered everyday usability without sacrificing the character and enjoyment for which MG had become famous.
This particular 1978 MGB GT has been developed into an attractive Mild Sebring Fast Road example, combining the familiar lines of the original GT with a purposeful selection of competition-inspired styling features.
Finished in Old English White, the car presents an appealing sporting appearance, enhanced by its Sebring-style front valance incorporating additional air intakes, chrome bumper conversion, Minilite-style alloy wheels and contrasting black exterior detailing. The distinctive front end gives the car a more aggressive appearance than a standard MGB GT, while retaining much of the model's traditional character.
The exterior is further complemented by a full-length Webasto-style folding sunroof, offering the opportunity for open-air motoring while retaining the practicality and security of the GT's fixed-roof design.
The paintwork presents reasonably well overall, although closer inspection reveals some areas of age-related deterioration and corrosion, particularly around the sills and some lower bodywork sections. These areas would benefit from attention, and prospective purchasers are encouraged to inspect the car carefully to establish the extent of any repairs required.
Inside, the MGB retains a smart black interior with contrasting light-coloured piping to the seats. The upholstery appears to have been well maintained, with the front seats and rear occasional bench presenting particularly well. The dashboard retains its traditional Smiths-style instrumentation, complemented by a three-spoke sports steering wheel, centre console and manual gear lever.
The black headlining and folding sunroof also appear to be in good order, contributing to an interior that presents favourably against the exterior's more obvious cosmetic imperfections. The practical rear luggage compartment remains neatly carpeted, retaining one of the MGB GT's most useful features.
Powered by the familiar 1,798cc B-Series four-cylinder engine, the MGB GT offers straightforward mechanical construction and an enjoyable driving experience. The vendor advises that the vehicle is running and driving, although the battery may require replacement. It should also be noted that the windscreen has a crack and will require attention.
Accompanying the car is a collection of paperwork, including the current V5C registration document, workshop manual, period motoring magazines and a selection of invoices and receipts. The earliest invoice dates from 1988, with further documentation from 1993 onwards, providing a useful historical record of the car's maintenance and ownership.
While the vehicle would benefit from further cosmetic attention, particularly to the corrosion visible around the sills, it represents an interesting opportunity for an enthusiast seeking an MGB GT with something a little different from standard specification.
