Introduced in 1971, the Mercedes-Benz R107 continued the marque's distinguished SL lineage, combining elegant styling with the comfort and engineering quality expected of Stuttgart's finest. Remaining in production until 1989, its enduring appeal owed much to a remarkably successful formula: handsome proportions, refined performance and an emphasis on relaxed, long-distance motoring. Today, the R107 remains one of the most recognisable Mercedes-Benz designs, equally at home on a continental tour or a leisurely drive through the British countryside. Joining the range in 1980, the 380 SL featured a lightweight, all-alloy 3.8 litre V8 coupled to a four-speed automatic transmission. Smooth power delivery and effortless cruising were central to its character, offering the refinement of a luxury saloon within an open-top grand tourer.
This 1985 example is presented in the striking combination of Signal Red coachwork with a contrasting black interior. Particularly well suited to the R107's clean lines, the colour scheme gives the car an unmistakably period appearance, complemented by the model's distinctive broad grille, prominent three-pointed star and bright exterior detailing. The car was subject to a repaint in 2015 at a cost of approximately £4,500 and more recent improvements include replacement chrome front bumper and trims, rear bumper trim and a new rear window in the soft-top.
In right hand drive configuration, it offers the familiar appeal of a classic Mercedes-Benz roadster with the newer lightweight 3.8 litre M116 SOHC V8 producing 215bhp and 224lb/ft through a four-speed automatic gearbox and torque converter. Dating from the final year of 380 SL production, it represents a mature example of the model before the revised SL range arrived. With four former registered keepers, a good history file with MoT test certificates dating back to 2014 together with some Mercedes-Benz service invoices and additional paperwork.
The appeal of the R107 lies in its balance of elegance, comfort and understated presence. Its design has aged gracefully, retaining the sense of occasion that made these cars so desirable when new. Finished in an attractive colour combination and equipped with the characteristic V8 and automatic drivetrain, this 380 SL offers an inviting introduction to one of Mercedes-Benz's most enduring open-top models.
