Introduced in October 1938, the Series E received a substantial restyle, featuring a 'waterfall' dummy grille, headlights integrated into the wings and the removal of the running boards. Power came from the upgraded Morris USHM-series engine, which retained its side-valve configuration but benefited from a revised cylinder head, producing 29bhp. The four-speed gearbox also represented an improvement, now featuring synchromesh on second, third and top gears, while top speed was approximately 58mph. General production resumed after the war in 1945, although UK-built tourers were no longer offered. In Australia, however, a thriving coachbuilding industry continued to produce tourer versions using imported chassis and mechanical components. The Series Z, a van derivative with a five-cwt payload, remained in production from 1940 until 1953, while an Australian coupe utility version, commonly known as a 'ute', combined imported chassis and engines with locally constructed bodies.
This delightful Morris 8 Series Z utility was purchased through Lloyds Auctions in Australia in 2018 and later sold by Historics in 2022. Described as fully restored, it arrived in outstanding condition and is finished in attractive Heritage Green with contrasting upholstery. During its restoration in Australia, the engine and four-speed gearbox were comprehensively rebuilt, reportedly at a cost of $11,000. The four-cylinder petrol engine starts readily and we are told the car drives well. Since returning to the UK, its fabulous rear woodwork has been fully renovated. A removable hood is also included for open-air driving. This rare and highly appealing vehicle is presented in a condition seldom seen on UK roads. Consigned by Charlie McCreery
