Austin's approach to construction meant there was no single 'standard' Austin 7. Developed in large numbers from 1923, the cars came in numerous body styles and were soon competing in both circuit racing and trials. They remain popular in both original and modified forms, as this charming example embodies. This was subsequently originally stripped by its then owner and its roof lowered by 2 inches. The bare-metal shell was then primed and repainted in its current 'Lily-Pad' green with contrasting black wings. Beneath the bonnet, Austin 7 specialists Pigsty Racing upgraded the engine to 'trials' specification, fitting a forged Phoenix crankshaft, new crack-tested conrods and forged pistons. Further modifications include a revised oil system, gas-flowed ports, specialist 'Pigsty' valve springs, new valve guides and a 'Pigsty' trials-profile camshaft. A modified Superloy cylinder head re-profiled the combustion chambers to improve flow and raise the compression ratio. Power is transmitted through a lightened & balanced flywheel and clutch assembly and new Tudor wheels and Blockley tyres complete the upgrades. Part of a small specialist collection, the car has seen little recent use although does benefit from a from Rees Bros. service in June last year but runs well and would certainly benefit from more regular outings.
