The name CL derives from the German 'Coupe Luxusklasse', meaning Luxury Coupe, and the model has its roots in the distinguished Mercedes-Benz SEC range, which evolved into the S-Class Coupe before the CL name was introduced in 1996. Sharing much of its engineering and technology with the contemporary S-Class, the CL offered the same exceptional levels of luxury, refinement and performance in a more sporting two-door configuration. Built on a shorter wheelbase, it featured a pillarless design, elegant proportions and a range of powerful engines, with Mercedes-Benz reserving its higher-output powertrains for the flagship coupe. As a result, the CL combined effortless grand touring ability with the very latest in German automotive engineering, incorporating sophisticated suspension systems, advanced safety features and an extensive range of comfort equipment.

This Japanese-market example is powered by a 5.0-litre V8 and finished in metallic silver with a black leather interior. Supplied with Mercedes-Benz service history from new until 2012, it was imported into the UK in late 2015, after which it saw very little use and was kept in dry storage, receiving two oil services despite covering only approximately 400 miles over the following seven years. It was subsequently offered for sale by Historics in September 2023. Equipment includes climate control, cruise control, electrically adjustable and heated seats, an electric sunroof and a UK-converted odometer displaying miles per hour.
