Professor Anthony Stevens - Car Design Originals Featured Popular
Professor Anthony Stevens is one of Britain's most accomplished automotive engineers, designers and automotive strategists, with a career spanning more than 60 years at the forefront of the global motor industry.
During his remarkable career, he has been responsible for the planning, design and engineering of around 100 complete vehicle programmes and more than 1,000 engineering and future market projects. His work has influenced some of Britain's most recognisable marques, including Hillman, Sunbeam, Humber, Singer, Chrysler UK, Triumph, MG, Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and many others.
As Chief Engine Designer and later Product Planning Manager at the Rootes Group, Professor Stevens played a leading role in the development of the highly successful Rootes Arrow range, including the Hillman Hunter, Sunbeam Rapier, Humber Sceptre, Singer Vogue and the performance Sunbeam Rapier H120. The Arrow programme went on to achieve sales of around two million vehicles worldwide and remained in production for more than 25 years, including as the Paykan, Iran's national car.
His pioneering work extended far beyond production vehicles. Throughout his career he developed innovative engine technologies, advanced vehicle concepts, competition cars, lightweight construction techniques and future transport strategies, many of which were years ahead of their time. His achievements include early work on high-pressure aluminium die-cast engine blocks, toothed belt camshaft drives and crankshaft oilway designs that later became standard practice throughout the automotive industry.
Alongside his engineering career, Professor Stevens is an accomplished sculptor, designer, futurist and author, bringing together engineering, creativity and commercial strategy in a way few automotive designers have achieved.
Today he continues to share his extraordinary experience through consultancy, publications and speaking engagements, offering a unique insight into the past, present and future of automotive design.
