Back in the early days of automotive design a lot of features which are common place now were just being discovered.  With all the big manufacturers trying to get sales it was always a race to see who would have the latest and greatest offering.  Buick scored a pretty unique first in 1939 when they were the to introduce turn signals which still wouldn't appear on other makes for years to come.
